4 cycling days

Few days ago I decided to try cycling as an alternative way of travelling. There was no special plan apart of heading South-West.

Does proper cycling always starts with a puncture
After first and most painful day of cycling it turned out that one interesting destination is only one day of pedalling away. Borne Sulinowo is a post military town. Most of buildings look the same here. They used to be in army use, but now part of them is abandoned or for sale.

Old warehouses looked amazing in nearly setting sun. It's a paradise for explorers and military freaks!

Abandoned garage named automobile repair shop (АВТОМОБИЛЬНАЯ РЕМОНТНАЯ МАСТЕРСКАЯ in Russian) was still there. Russian army left the town in October 1992, but the town was officially opened to the public on June 5, 1993, at 12 am.

Few miles from Borne Sulinowo was military range established by Hitler's army. He brought huge amounts of sand and created artificial desert for Afrika Korps training. Later the Russians created nuclear unit in case of war with The West. Secret military base is abandoned and unfortunately inaccessible on road touring bike. As there is similar, twin city in Germany and it consist large underground part, some say base close to Borne Sulinowo is supposed to have one too. These are still just rumours, because no one have discovered it yet.

Short break caused by the rain

On my way I had opportunity to meet nice people and to see beauty of Polish spring nature. Cycling on Polish roads was safer than I initially thought. Cyclepacking is definitely fun as long as your muscles are prepared to work hard and you can count on good company.

Almost 330 km covered in 4 days

  1. Hi Alan,
I find it fascinating what you have discovered, this abandonned military city with houses all in the same style. Did you see some old vehicles that had been left over too? How did you find the history of the place? cheers

  2. Hi JF

I was told (by another cyclist I met in Szcecinek town) stories about underground city, and some facts about some Russians still living in Borne Sulinowo. I found other facts on wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borne_Sulinowo. If there are some old vehicles, they most certainly have owners nowadays. Poland is really interesting place if it's about relics of WWII and Cold War.
